Advertising Association response to the Gambling Commission consultation on “Gambling advertisements and impact on responsible gambling”

Abstract

The AA's response to the Gambling Commission's "Gambling advertisements and impact on responsible gambling" consultation, which considers whether there is a case for incorporating educational / warning messages and / or displaying licensed status within advertising by gambling operators. Argues that the advertising codes published in 2007 by the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) will go a very long way to achieving government objectives. Argues that as a result, the gambling industry should be provided with the opportunity to pursue a voluntary approach as to whether or not to incorporate messaging in their advertising. Makes a proposal for simultaneous delivery of a combined signposting / educational messaging approach that makes direct use of a website initiative by the Responsibility in Gambling Trust.
