Abstract

Argues that the Gambling Act 2005 will provide the British public with increased opportunities and access to gambling. Introduces the public health approach to harm from gambling, psychological models of problem gambling, and some of the mental and physical health, and social problems related to problem gambling. Argues that problem gambling is a health issue that needs to be taken seriously by all in the medical profession, and that urgent need exists to increase awareness in the medical and health professions about gambling related problems and to develop effective strategies to prevent and treat problem gambling.
