Richard McGowan, SJ, is an associate professor at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA. Professor McGowan is a nationally recognized expert on legalized gaming and the tobacco and alcohol industries. His research focuses on the interaction of the business and public policy processes especially as they relate to the gambling, tobacco, and alcohol industries. He has published four books on gambling entitled: State Lotteries and Legalized Gambling: Painless Revenue or Painful Mirage; Industry as a Player in the Social and Political Arenas; Government and the Transformation of the Gaming Industry; and The Gambling Problem. Professor McGowan has also published over 60 referred articles in various academic journals and made over 90 academic and professional presentations.
