Gambling and impulse control disorders

Abstract

Many mental disorders are characterized by difficulties in emotional and behavioral regulation, and these conditions are typically referred to as impulse control disorders. In this chapter, we summarize knowledge and treatment of a specific disorder that relates to poor impulse control—gambling disorder—as well as two other behaviors associated with impulse dyscontrol—kleptomania and road rage. We also define these disorders and their variants, outline their prevalence and comorbidities, and review how they are diagnosed. We then review how these impulse control disorders are treated and relevant treatment literature. We conclude the chapter with future directions for research, practice, and prevention
