Why people gamble. Final report

Abstract

The document reports on a series of initial studies in which people from varying backgrounds were asked to describe and explain their experiences and reasons for gambling. The studies break new ground in that they not only aim to describe what is going on, but, by asking "why people gamble", they also aim to identify explanations for what is observed. The three different parts of the report include, first, a comprehensive literature review of factors that influence gambling, second, a set of individual key informant interviews and a series of focus groups, and finally the development and piloting of a detailed questionnaire that will be used later to explore the explanatory factors in more detail.
